Did you all see my son’s Modern Coastal Bedroom Reveal? I have been getting a lot of emails asking about where I got his grasscloth dresser. I love a great IKEA hack and this one was easier to create than you might think! If you’ve ever shopped for grasscloth furniture then you know it is quite pricey, and out of my budget for sure. I’m going to show you all how to get a high-end, designer look for less with this DIY Grasscloth IKEA Dresser Hack. A step by step video is provided for you below.
The bedroom suite we had chosen for our son’s modern coastal bedroom was the Hemnes Collection from IKEA. The dresser is made of solid pine with a semi-transparent white stain. It was lovely as is, but I wanted to add more natural texture and visual interest to the plain white furniture in the room. Peel and stick grasscloth wallpaper was the perfect and non-permanent choice.
GRASSCLOTH IKEA DRESSER HACK
For this project you will need the following items:
(affiliate links provided for your shopping convenience)
- Peel and Stick Grasscloth Wallpaper (8 color choices available. I chose Tan). Here are more options you might like: Beige Grasscloth, Khaki Linen
- pencil
- scissors
- putty knife (metal or plastic, or even a credit card or kitchen spatula would work)
The beauty of peel and stick faux grasscloth wallpaper is that besides working beautifully on walls, it works amazing on furniture. The grasscloth print is so photo realistic, yet is smooth to the touch. There are other wallpaper options available that do have a bit of texture if that is what you prefer. Those will be a bit more expensive. The next wonderful characteristic about peel and stick wallpaper is how easy it is to reposition and remove. This project does not have to be a permanent option. You can remove the paper without damage to the underlying surface at any time.
Step 1: Remove hardware knobs from the dresser drawers. Lay the drawer fronts face down on the backside of the wallpaper. Pay attention to the direction of the grasscloth weave and make sure your drawer is positioned so that the printed weave is going in the direction you desire.
Step 2: With a pencil, trace along the exterior of the drawer front and cut out.
Step 3: Turn the drawer face up so you can apply the paper. Carefully peel off the back and align the paper along the edge. Feel free to reposition the paper as needed. Slowly peel back the liner paper and smooth the paper with the putty knife. Smooth out any and all air bubbles with the putty knife.
Step 4: If the drawer edge has a bevel to it then make sure to smooth those edge down well with the putty knife. Apply pressure at a 45 degree angle and run the knife along the edge, ensuring a good seal.
Step 5: With your finger, find the existing hole for the hardware and rub that area to create a small impression. Take a screw and poke it into the hole to create a pilot hole. This helps to prevent any tearing of the wallpaper when you reattach the hardware pulls.

Hi,
How many Peel and Stick Grasscloth Wallpaper is needed for this?
Kim @ Sand & Sisal says
I used less than 2/3 of the roll for the project. I also used it on an additional side table in my son’s room. One roll goes a long way, thankfully! Hope that helps! ~ KIM

Oh yes! That was from HomeGoods. I saw it, loved it, thought about it, and went home. Then came back the next day and was thrilled that it was still available! It was around $60 which is more than I wanted to pay but after looking online, I realized it was a deal.
